Croatian journalists express solidarity with STA

Zagreb, 11 May - Croatian journalists issued a statement on Tuesday to express solidarity with journalists in Slovenia, where "the public and independent press agency STA is exposed to increasing political and financial pressures".

The Croatian Journalist Association (HND) and the Trade Union of Croatian Journalists (SNH) are worried about the situation which forced the STA to seek "donations from citizens, who must be guaranteed the right to information".

As the association says on its website, Slovenia lost four spots to rank 36th among 180 states in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

It also posted a photo of members of both organisations standing on a balcony of the Media Centre in Zagreb with #zaobSTAnek, the slogan of the Slovenian fund-raising campaign for the STA launched last week.

The statement says the HND and SNH join the international journalist organisations which had pointed to risks to media freedom under the Janez Janša government.
