The STA was founded only days before Slovenia declared independence in a bid to inform the international community of developments in Slovenia and ensure informational independence of the new state.
With the first news item, the agency said that its purpose was to inform Slovenian and foreign media about the developments in the country. It could be understood as an announcement of the information independence of Slovenia.
The idea of a national press agency was born in the late 1980s, and an agreement on its founding was signed on 24 May 1991 between PR and media company INI and the then Slovenian government.
The STA has evolved into a modern media outlet which daily publishes a few hundred articles, photos and videos.
